Biography
Andrew James Weatherall was born in Windsor, England, in 1963, and grew tired of suburbia by his early teens. In the mid-1980s his eclectic record collection caught the attention of Danny Rampling, who invited him to DJ at the London club Shoom, and Weatherall became part of the emerging acid house scene, helping start the fanzine Boy's Own and later founding the label Boy's Own Recordings and the production outfit Bocca Juniors.
In 1989 he remixed Happy Mondays' "Hallelujah" alongside Paul Oakenfold, and the following year remixed New Order's "World in Motion" and produced Primal Scream's "Loaded," a radical reworking that used only seconds of the band's original track. That work led to Weatherall producing Primal Scream's 1991 album Screamadelica, which won the inaugural Mercury Music Prize and became one of the most celebrated albums of the decade.
He continued recording under projects including Sabres of Paradise, Two Lone Swordsmen with Keith Tenniswood, and Asphodells, and later ran the club night series A Love from Outer Space. Weatherall died of a pulmonary embolism on February 17, 2020, at age 56.
