Biography
Derek Fieldsoe, who also recorded as Triad, discovered ambient music as a high school senior after buying The Future Sound of London's ISDN on a whim, having previously only listened to acts like Chemical Brothers and Underworld. In 1997 he attended his first underground party at San Francisco's Cyborganic, where he heard a DJ drop one of his favorite tracks from that album, and struck up a friendship with the DJ, who went by Boomerang.
Boomerang brought Fieldsoe into the DJ scene, running the Quest chill room parties together from November 1998 through October 1999. Playing a chill room set at Home Base the following month, Fieldsoe met Red Stickman, who had also been sharing ambient mixes with him and Boomerang during Quest, and the three began spinning ambient sets together, eventually bringing in Drop, Harken, and Skye to found what became the Ambient Mafia collective.
