From San Francisco, California

Merit Toutjian, known as DJ Sifu, began hosting DJ nights with Brianna Pope, known as Honey B, in 1996 at Yo Mama's Cafe, a club they co-owned in Oakland, as drum and bass collectives like Phunckateck and BASS Kru were spreading the sound through the Bay Area's weekly club nights. In 1998 the two founded Thermal Recordings, the third drum and bass label to emerge from the Bay Area and the first based in Oakland, named for its energy-related theme.

Within its first few years Thermal released 17 records, including work from UFO! and Oakland artist Canis, along with mix CDs under Toutjian's own DJ Sifu alias, including Telekinetik in 1997, Circulation in 1999, and Solenoid in 2001.
