Biography
Paul D. Miller, known as DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, was born in Washington, DC, in 1970 and grew up on a mix of go-go, punk, and hip hop, taking his stage name from a character in William S. Burroughs's novel Nova Express. He studied French literature and philosophy at Bowdoin College in Maine, where he hosted a radio show called Dr. Seuss's Eclectic Jungle for four years, before moving to New York and becoming a founding figure in the illbient scene through the Soundlab collective.
His 1996 debut album, Songs of a Dead Dreamer, is widely regarded as a formative illbient work, followed by 1998's Riddim Warfare, an underground hit built from field recordings and turntable collage. He's since remixed artists ranging from Metallica to Steve Reich, authored several books including Rhythm Science, and built a parallel career as a multimedia artist with work shown at the Whitney Biennial and the Venice Biennale.
