Biography
Leroy Small, known as DJ SS, started out as a hip hop and rare groove DJ in his hometown of Leicester under the name Scratchen Stein. When hardcore exploded in the UK in the early 1990s, he and his partner Eidris began promoting the Total Kaos party every Friday in Leicester, and staged one of the first large indoor raves at Donington Park in 1991, drawing 6,000 people.
SS co-founded Formation Records, which spawned more than 30 sub-labels and released early classics like "Breakbeat Pressure" before he stepped away from production around 1993 as the genre shifted toward ragga influences. He returned a few years later, and his and the label's biggest track, 1995's Love Story-sampling "The Lighter," remains one of drum and bass's most enduring records.
