Dutch learned to DJ from the California disco DJ Mark Fahey in 1989 and, taking his cue from DJ Dan the year after, began throwing warehouse parties in San Francisco with members of A Rave Called Sharon under the name Break Inc. He started the Area 51 events in the Bay Area in 1993, bringing in Josh Wink, Joey Beltram and Laidback Luke, and the CDC Soundsystem parties with Carlos and Christoff the year after.

He turned toward the psy-trance coming out of Goa around 1996, and in 1999 started Thump Radio and the Thump parties with Mason Rothert, Jim Seagel, Brian McDonald and Brian Dobson, which brought over trance acts including Infected Mushroom, Hallucinogen and Astral Projection. He helped create the Opulent Temple camp at Burning Man from 2005 and later White Ocean, and now plays minimal techno and tech house.
