Biography

Frankie Mitchell grew up in Brooklyn, inheriting his father's record collection and DJing at a neighborhood roller disco as a child in the late 1970s. By the late 1980s he was producing records with Lenny Dee, and in 1989 he was invited to play what he expected to be a 5,000-person rave in England. The crowd turned out to be 25,000, and he came home determined to bring what he'd seen back to Brooklyn.

With his brother Adam X, he launched Storm Rave in May 1991, starting with a few hundred people in a Flatbush brickyard and growing to thousands within a couple of years. The series gave early US bookings to Richie Hawtin, Sven Väth, Doc Martin, Josh Wink, and DJ Keoki, and the crowd around it is where the Peace, Love, Unity, Respect ethos, PLUR, took hold and spread through American rave culture.

Berlin's Love Parade named its 1991 and 1992 parades after two of his tracks, "The Future Is Ours" and "My House Is Your House (And Your House Is Mine)." He revived Storm Rave in 2015 as part of the Red Bull Music Academy Festival, more than twenty years after the last one.
