Biography
Joe Rice, who also performs as Bar Miso, co-founded the eclectic weekly party Dub in Los Angeles with Monty Luke and Markem X before moving to San Francisco in 1994, where he became a resident at Mad, a weekly techno club night that brought Detroit figures like Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, and Alan Oldham to the city alongside local residents including Monty Luke, Jon Santos, and Ethan Miller. A formative trip to Detroit during this period included hearing Ken Collier DJ and getting a tour of The Martian's studio.
He went on to help produce San Francisco events including Sabotage, Static, and Circuit Breaker, and wrote about music for XLR8R and Urb. He currently hosts Bar Miso, a weekly streaming series and occasional pop-up inspired by Japanese kissa culture, exploring ambient, jazz, and related sounds.
