Joe Flores was born in Brooklyn and raised in Corona, Queens, and started playing house parties in New York in 1989. He broke through in 1991 as a founding member of the Chocolate Factory DJ collective, playing legendary NYC rooms like Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium, and NASA, and helped turn the afterhours party Save the Robots into an institution. His first residency came at the Together nights at the Roxy, alongside Danny Tenaglia, Louie Vega, and Roger Sanchez.

He's cited San Francisco's Wicked Crew, Jeno, Garth, Markie, and Thomas Bullock, as one of his biggest musical inspirations from that era. In 2000 he started his own label, Maya Records, and has since released music on Defected, Desolat, Poker Flat, and Suara, including a collaborative EP with Doc Martin in 2018.
