From Los Angeles, California

In 1992, DJ Jun and his music partner Tomas Palermo approached Solomon Mansoor, owner of Hollywood's Gaslight bar, about hosting a Monday night that would offer an alternative to the era's popular Top 40 sound. The result was the Umoja Jazz and Ragga Lounge, with Jun handling acid jazz and hip-hop while Tomas brought reggae, and the two linked up with clothing brands 555 Soul and Funkeesentials and brought in New York guest DJs including Funkmaster Flex and DJ Stretch Armstrong.

The night helped lead to the founding of the Umoja Hi-Fi Soundsystem in 1993, alongside Tomas, Daz, Culture D, and Cokni O'Dire. Jun has continued DJing around Los Angeles, holding residencies at the Sunset Standard Hotel, Cinespia's summer movie screenings at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Soundlessons at The Echo, and Amoeba Music Hollywood.
