Biography
Scott Friedel was born in the Bronx and moved around the East Coast as a child, living in New York, Washington DC, and Philadelphia before studying at Oxford University in England, where he experienced the UK's rave and alternative dance scenes of the late 1980s. Returning to the US, he began organizing his own DJ parties on the East Coast before relocating to San Francisco, where he co-founded the Hardkiss collective with Gavin Bieber and Rob Cameron, known respectively as Gavin Hardkiss and Robbie Hardkiss.
As Scott Hardkiss, and under the solo pseudonym God Within, he released the singles "Raincry" in 1993 and "The Phoenix" in 1994, and his production work appeared on the trio's 1995 compilation Delusions of Grandeur. He released his first commercial DJ mix, Yes, on Hardkiss in 1996, and continued producing and DJing after the label splintered, releasing the mix album United DJs of America, Vol. 17 in 2001 and remixing the Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize??" in 2002.
Scott Hardkiss died unexpectedly of a cerebral aneurysm on March 25, 2013.
