Biography
Tony Hewitt grew up in Manchester, England, and started DJing in 1991 before becoming part of the wave of British transplants who helped shape San Francisco's house scene in the 1990s, alongside DJs including Jeno, Garth, and Thomas Bullock. In 2000 he founded the label Tango Recordings, launching it right as the West Coast house sound was breaking through nationally, and went on to found Nightshift Recordings and Detour Recordings as well.
He built long-running collaborative partnerships with fellow West Coast artists Hipp-E, Halo, and Onionz, releasing as Hipp-E & Tony and Onionz & Tony, and has also worked closely with Doc Martin and Terry Francis. Tango Recordings, now based in Oakland, continues to release his productions alongside a roster of West Coast house artists.
