Frankie Bones Mixtapes
A collection of mixes from the man widely credited as the godfather of American rave culture - a Brooklyn native whose impact on the US underground is simply without equal.
Growing up in Brooklyn, Frankie Bones inherited his father's entire vinyl record collection and immersed himself in New York freestyle music and street art. He started DJing during the disco era as young as ten years old, learning about programming, BPMs, and blending records at a roller disco rink. By the late 1980s he was producing records with Lenny Dee and building a reputation - and then came the moment that changed everything. In August 1989 he traveled to England to play what he expected to be a party of 5,000 people, and instead played to 25,000 as the sun came up. Profoundly moved by what he witnessed, he came home determined to bring it to America. The Storm Raves began in Brooklyn in May 1991 with just a few hundred people and grew to thousands, with the likes of Richie Hawtin, Sven Väth, Doc Martin, and Josh Wink launching their careers on those dance floors. It was also at a Storm Rave that Bones first voiced the phrase that would define a generation - getting on the microphone to preach peace, love, unity, and respect, giving the rave community the PLUR credo that endures to this day.
These tapes document a DJ who wasn't just playing records, he was building something. Essential listening.
