Vancouver Mixtapes

DJ mixes and mixtapes from one of the Pacific Northwest's most passionate underground dance music communities - digitized and restored from original cassette tape and CD recordings.

Vancouver occupied a unique position in the North American rave circuit. Geographically isolated from the major US cities to the south but deeply connected to the broader West Coast underground, the city built a scene that was genuinely its own - shaped by the Pacific Northwest's outdoor culture, its proximity to Seattle, and a community that was fiercely dedicated to the music for its own sake. Richard's on Richards, one of Vancouver's most iconic venues, hosted everything from touring acts to student-fueled rave nights like the Half-Alive parties, and the city's warehouse and after-hours circuit ran parallel to a thriving club scene throughout the decade. The Canadian connection to Detroit techno ran deep too - Richie Hawtin, raised just across the border in Windsor, Ontario, was already a foundational figure in the North American underground by the early 1990s, and his influence was felt up and down the West Coast.

Vancouver's 1990s rave history is less documented than it deserves to be. These tapes are part of the effort to change that. If you were part of the scene and have memories, context, or names to add, drop them in the comments - this archive is as much yours as it is ours. Restored from analog sources and preserved here for the record.
