The rave scene was large enough to have real infrastructure - dedicated promoters, independent labels, record pools, and a thriving tape trading culture - but still underground enough to feel like a genuine counterculture. House, techno, trance, and breakbeat were all developing distinct American flavors, and the DJ mix cassette was still the primary way those sounds spread from city to city.
