Biography
John Juan Mendez was born in Guatemala in 1977 and raised in Los Angeles, where he started DJing at 16. In 1999 he connected with Birmingham producer Regis, founder of Downwards Records, and in 2002 became a member of Regis's techno collective Sandwell District alongside Female and Function, also serving as the group's art director.
Mendez began releasing solo work as Silent Servant in 2006, and after Sandwell District disbanded in 2011, founded the label Jealous God with Regis and James Ruskin. He released two solo albums, Negative Fascination (2012) and Shadows of Death and Desire (2018), both on Hospital Productions, and formed the group Tropic of Cancer with Camella Lobo.
A regular at clubs including Berlin's Berghain and Tresor, Mendez released a retrospective EP, In Memoriam, on Tresor Records in late 2023. He died on January 18, 2024, at age 46.
