Biography
Edwin Garro, known as UFO!, is a San Francisco native who came up through the city's hip hop DJ battle scene in the late 1980s and early '90s, drawing influence from turntablist legend Qbert. In 1996 he co-founded the Phunckateck Communications collective with Noel Stiers, bringing together drum and bass producers and DJs mostly based in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and the crew's parties helped establish the city as a major US hub for the genre.
His 1999 single "Science Fact / Enemy Infiltration" was among the first US-produced drum and bass records widely bought by American ravers, staking out an abstract, techstep-leaning sound distinct from the UK scene it drew from. In 1998 he also became a resident DJ and flyer artist for the long-running SF party Eklektic, where his artwork built around strong female imagery helped define the night's visual identity.
He's released music on Thermal Recordings, Green Label, and Pneuma Recordings, collaborated with artists including John Tejada and Hive, and continues to record and perform, most recently exploring jungle, footwork, and juke influences on his 2022 EP Level Up.
