By 1998, American dance music was navigating a defining tension: the underground scenes that had built rave culture were thriving, while larger commercial events and festival culture were beginning to pull the mainstream in a different direction. House and techno remained powerful underground forces in their home cities, trance was drawing bigger and bigger crowds, and the mix tape circuit continued to document what was happening at ground level, away from the hype.
