The turn of the millennium was a complicated moment for American dance music. The rave scene had never been larger or more commercially visible - and it had never faced more legal pressure, with local and federal crackdowns targeting promoters and venues across the country. Through it all, the underground persisted. House, techno, and trance scenes continued to thrive in clubs and warehouse spaces, and the mix tape and mix CD circuit remained the connective tissue holding it all together.
