Evan Roth moved to San Francisco from Philadelphia in 1995 and was one of the founders of B.A.S.S. Kru, the collective that threw the city's first all-night drum and bass parties. He has worked most often alongside Rinse, and the two of them cut a run of tapes together starting with Backlash in 1998.

That same year the pair opened Compound Records, the first shop on the West Coast dealing strictly in drum and bass, later adding a second location in Seattle. He ran the Compound and Obscene labels alongside it, and the Red Tape distribution company that put out most of his own tapes. Vape Gun / Ruckus came out on Obscene in 2001 and Mazel Tov Cocktail on Red Tape the same year, with Live In Los Angeles following on Red Tape in 2003 and Legacy on Compound.
